Continuing the #My30DayWorld challenge, Æsc and I have both picked a race to talk about. The Legacy of Ash began as a role-playing setting for us, slowly evolving into fantasy fiction as the characters and cultures we created began to take on lives of their own. We hope you’ll follow us over the next few weeks as we reveal a little more about our world and the characters who bring it to life.

4/5: What Rare and Interesting Races Populate Your World?
Rare and xenophobic, veirellin appear to be half-man, half-bird. The result of varukhiri experimentation with crucic magic, sages speculate, these bird-folk often dwell in remote forests, or along cliffs and coasts. Cast aside and forgotten by the varukhiri, it is said, they are often encountered in human societies eking out an existence as scavengers, beggars and thieves in cities. Treated with contempt by other races who find their mannerisms, language and appearance unnerving, veirellin tend to distance themselves in sullen enclaves – which only serves to reinforce their “otherness”. They are often referred to as “rooks”, or by other less flattering epithets.
Unknown to outsiders, veirellin have a long, rich history of poetry and song. *Tuekkar* are veirellin poets & singers, as well as the keepers of the bird-folk’s history and lore. Almost all of the reclusive veirellin boast an astonishing vocal range, and are uncanny mimics, able to expertly reproduce voices, conversations and songs that they have heard briefly.
While crowlike bird-folk are the most commonly encountered, there exist veirellin that bear the plumage, manner and appearance of numerous other birds – owls in the north, vultures and hawks in warmer climes, and seabirds along coastal ocean regions, just to name a few.

There are quite a few races we’ve developed for the Legacy of Ash. The giant mirenir. The varukhiri. The amphibian rittauri. Æsc has already mentioned the qas. And we’ve spoken a little bit about the ans’relan demons. There are more, and most have had an impact of how the world has developed.
On Alrend’ris, between the Miria Empire and the Republic of Inturian, there is a broad and desolate land called the Heramear. Here, a race called the kinasahr dwell, though some have left the Heramear in search of glory in the world outside.
Most kinasahr stand between five and seven feet tall, their skin ranges from dark green to earthy ochre. Some have stripes or mottled patches, and others have skin etched with golden veins. They also have strange, rock like formations that grow on their forehead, jaw, neck, shoulders, and joints. These stony protrusions act as natural armour, helping the kinasahr survive in the hostile Hearmear.
The kinasahr are a warrior race, think klingons (TNG or DS9) mixed with orcs. They live in tribes spread out over the Heramear, warring and fighting among themselves, blood feuds lasting for generations. United, they would be a formidable foe for either the Miriai to the west or the Intur to the east. But passion and anger runs too deep in kinasahr warriors, and many of the tribes could never tolerate fighting alongside the others.
Divided, the tribes fight for control of the Heramear. There is one city far in the northern reaches of the Heramear, a Rukaran ruin that all kinasahr warriors respect. It is called the City of Shattered Stone, and within its crumbling walls all blood feuds must wait. Here, there can be no fighting between the tribes. And, most of the time, this law is maintained.
I’ve written about the kinasahr twice. Once in the short story ‘Redfall’, where you see the kinasahr through the eyes of a merchant caravan crossing the plains. In this tale, you meet a kinasahr warrior Hunts-With-Pride.
But I’ve written another story about Hunts-With-Pride called ‘Weeping Stone’ can be found in an anthology called ‘Swords for Hire’. Set years before ‘Redfall’, the kinasahr warrior you meet in ‘Weeping Stone’ is much younger, and has yet to find his purpose.
